Windy (again)

We’re holding. I think. Hard to tell at five in the morning. Darkest hour is right before the dawn, like Mr. Dylan said. The one with the harmonica. Meanwhile, the Welsh ensign is having its revenge on us, stiff and bristling over our front cabin. In the gusts of wind, Quest is snaking on her anchor, visiting the boat next to us and then deciding to check out the beach. Like we’re driving without going anywhere. Let’s hope anyway. The last time we dragged in Carricaou just over a month ago, our lives changed forever. It must be the coincidence of events that’s making my stomach churn now in a novel, extra-churning kind of way. Plus the guy behind us will be pissed if we hit him.

The ground here is sea grass with sandy holes. We'd anchored in one of these sandy holes on Monday. Our thinking: it’s better if you don’t rip up the grass for the turtles. Right? The downside of our care for turtle food however, is that sand tends to be crumbly. Coralline. About as good for holding as it is for making a cake. In fact when we'd anchored on Monday, we discovered with snorkelling masks afterwards that our anchor had pulled down the length of sand before it got to the sea grass bed. Our grey German anchor had finally held between sand and sea grass. A sort of anchor-digging interface zone. This is good German technology for sure but still, the wind always decides in the end. Whether you’re crossing channels or oceans or sitting in a bay. Not good for control freaks that are on their computers at 5 in the morning. Wait, who? (hide under table)...

Now, to more solid affairs…..We have some pics below of our shore crew visiting Quest for the first time yesterday! Question: who would love a boat they hadn’t seen before? Gave you all the help you could ever ask for, put your blogs on Facebook, taught one daughter French yesterday afternoon and the other the tricks of pastel shading and then patiently, always patiently in between digging toes in warm and welcome sand, explained the fundamentals of a hashtag? These are shore crew you can anchor your boat in.

Love from Quest and her crew xx
