We sat under an almond tree afterwards and Lulu tried to join internet school. End-of-term assessments were going on back in internet Wales. Lulu plugged into her Spanish assessment. This was probably a mistake. Maybe not. Things have been tough lately... we'd been sailing for days....anyway. We sat post-assessment trying to recover. Played a word game; beautiful beach, curly cake, doleful dolphin, each taking a turn while Delphine hovered over me, jiggling. 'You just popped a serious dance move.’ We stopped and looked up. A lady in baggy red pants and a sparkling top appeared. ‘I tell you what,’ she said, smiling at the girls, ‘I’ll show you a magic trick if you dance for me.’ She didn’t wait for the answer. There were two spongy yellow balls in her hand, then there was one. One ball in Lulu’s clenched fist. And then there was two. It was enough to make you bang your head against the almond tree…were there two balls the whole time?! The magician didn’t say. She just looked happy.
'So now it's your turn,’ she said and sat down. With a small amount of persuasion (yes, you Delphine) in front of the tourists milling past, the Antiguan Customs guy who’d taken five, the chefs cooking on the barbecue for the hotel next door, the girls danced. Then the magician danced. She guessed our ages and we sat down again. She told us things that a stranger would only normally know by asking. Strange but it felt perfectly natural too. Before she went off to entertain the super yacht Nero to raise funds and her promote her charity, she said, ‘Repeat after me. Helping women brings good luck.’ So we did.
