Title: Dry Tortugas

It was an easy 24 hr trip from Ft Myers to the Dry Tortugas – mainly motor as the winds weren’t around for most of the trip.

I heard someone on the beach describe the Dry Tortugas as being the closest thing to the Bahamas’ without being there. Well I don’t know since I’ve never been to the Bahamas, but this is one nice spot. Great little anchorage with snorkeling nearby. The anchorage  also has an abundance of sea life including terrapin.

Under the small world heading there are 7 sailboats here, 3 from the Houston area – go figure.

Close to the anchorage there is a ‘bird island’ that creates images of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. They like to rest on the bow railings of the boats at anchor. Well it was time for the cat to earn it’s keep. Roberta dragged him on deck waking him from his mid morning nap. He saw the birds and went into the stalking mode. Then I think he looked at his watch and realized it was 11AM, his sleep time, and promptly went back below decks and back to sleep. Around 7PM he was up and on patrol and ran the birds off.

No pictures this time – I’ll be posting them from Key West when we have high speed internet again. We’ll probably head for Key West Friday afternoon unless weather dictates and earlier departure.
