Dun Laoghaire

There are 900 berths in the Dun Laoghaire marina, it is absolutely enormous. After studying the east coast of Ireland this evening, we can see why it is the main port, there are really no other large ports around. That’s why there is so much focussed here; yacht racing, yacht cruising, dinghy sailing schools, big boat sailing schools, RIB courses, and a RO-RO ferry next door. It’s very impressive.

We were going to get diesel this morning which is the other side of the marina, just as we were about to cast off, a string of dinghies went past at the start of their training day 1. We paused and instantly got distracted by doing other things; topping up the engine oil, filling the water tanks, cleaning down below TC, doing some sewing, those sort of things, so by the time we eventually headed out to the diesel pontoon, we came upon the same string of dinghies returning for their lunch break!

All very good natured and we slipped into a gap in their line of Teras, Optimists and Fevas, and chugged on around to the diesel pontoon. Much to our delight, diesel is a lot less here than in the UK which was most welcome after so many hours of motoring recently.

So we’ve had a quiet day in port with not much wind outside. After shopping for 3 days supplies, we have just set the alarm for 0330 to catch the south going tide, ouch, early night tonight.

 This north wind is lasting another three days so we are hoping to make the most of it and get around the corner to the south coast of Ireland ~ fingers crossed it is enough to sail by!
