Skomer Island
051:44.07 N Skomer Island We will be eternally grateful to the lovely couple on the sailing boat ‘Penny Lane’ for suggesting we visit Skomer Island as we head north, we were very excited about seeing what was in store. So we sailed out of Dale this afternoon into rather a bleak lonely grey sea with cold air gusting 25 knots across the deck and tacked our way up the coast line. Fortunately the tide helped us move TC at over 8 knots towards, and into, a sheltered south facing cove on Skomer Island. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales quotes 350,000 breeding pairs of Manx Shearwaters, 40,000+ Atlantic Puffins, plus thousands of Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars. So we sailed into this National Nature Reserve, to find ourselves alone at anchor, surrounded by the most spectacular sight and sound of all these beautiful seabirds (and a family of grey seals) and spent three hours sitting in the cockpit just soaking it all up. The Puffins caught most of our attention with their beautiful colouring, hectic busy wings and just very endearing demeanour. We are in limited with wifi so sadly, no photos this evening, but we feel so very lucky to have been able to visit here this evening, it is a real treat and privilege. ~~~ The alarm is set for 0500 as we are heading next to Pwllheli ahead of another 30 knot northerly blow, it will be a 17hr journey, getting in very late tomorrow. Thank you for following our blog, and for your very kind feedback, we are enjoying sharing our journey with you. |
