Holyhead II

There is plenty to see here in Holyhead, we had a lovely walk ashore following a path around to ‘North Stack’ the promontory we rounded with all that tide. It is a very dramatic coastline and the standing waves and white horses below defied anyone to get their calculations wrong.

A permanent outdoor exhibition explains the building of the breakwater; work began in 1845 and 28 years later Prince Albert Prince of Wales declared the work complete.

This remarkable feat of engineering required 7 million tonnes of stone and 25 men lost their lives. Once it was realised how vital a shelter the breakwater was to provide, it was extended and extended to 1.5 miles in total, the longest in the UK. There is a constant flow of ships.

It has been fun to be in touch with RSYC member Patrick Farrell and his friend who are circumnavigating the UK on their beautiful Sun Odyssey 40.3 Lutetia. They set off a fortnight after us and Bol has been happy that until now they have been in our rear view mirror ~ until today when Lutetia sailed into Holyhead!

A great reunion and we’re chuffed to be invited to theirs for supper tonight.

Tomorrow I’m doing a slightly crazy thing and jumping on a train to London for one night to accompany and celebrate our Isabelle’s Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday we’ll set sail again to Peel on the Isle of Man where we’ve just discovered it is their TT weekend, Bol is just a tad excited!
