Fai
Tira
heads for Tilos 36:25.37N 27:19.87E 19th
June 2011 Departed Symi, after
shopping at local supermarket for bread, etc. Lifted anchor and motored
out heading to island of Tilos. The passage just
north of Symi is very narrow and shallow, depth only 3 meters. Fai Tira
had negotiated symi-lar channels before OK, so we went for it. On the way to the
island we switched the engine off and sailed for a short time. Tilos,
although very barren is famous for bird migrations and many of its visitors are
birdwatchers, hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare Bonelli’s eagle or the Eleonora’s
falcon as well as enjoying the local sea turtles and monk seal . Arriving at Tilos we
looked for anchorage in a large bay, where a catamaran already moored, but
decided to try the smaller bay. We found the mooring really rocky and
rolling but decided to stay put. During the evening it was great to hear
from both daughters, who telephoned to say "happy father's
day". Boat still
rocking furiously we departed at 5am, Judy still in bed – it is after all a
holiday, not an adventure. Pete and Jude |
