Friday 18/09 Fai Tira in
Baiona on anchor 42:07.20N 8:50.36W We arose to low
cloud and rain. John was feeling a little poorly. Not sure what it was
but it was affecting his sea legs and stomach. We had decided to go into
Baiona earlier than we usual get into towns, to see if we catch the shops
open. As you may or may not know the Spaish have got it right, and stop
work and shut up everything at 12:30 for three hours whilst they go to the bar
and then home for a quick afternoon siesta.. I have tried to instigate
this back in England and have spent most my working life heading to the pub for
lunch and coming out about 3.00 pm. Quite a few people in BT used to do
this. They don’t seem to do it anymore. No wonder the company
is in trouble. The staff is to stressed!!!!! Anyhow back to Baiona. We got in the
tender and headed off into town. John was looking decidedly dodgy so we
went to a bar and have some light refreshment. It was still raining so we
stayed there for a little while before exploring the old town. It was
lovely full of restaurants and bars and gift shops all with large model witches
outside. After a while
the rain stopped and the sun came out. John wanted to do some sketching
so we headed for a bar and sat in the sun. A sailor from Finland, called
Marco recognised us sat there and we invited him to join us for a drink. We had
met previously at two other harbours. He told us his life story which was
very interesting. His family house was on the border with Russia and part
of their land was on the Russian side but they couldn’t get to it or lay
claim to it. After John
had finished yet another masterpiece we headed off of the old fortified castle
on the headland. The site was fantastic and we walked around the walls
photographing the superb views. This historic site has had its interior
developed into a 4 star Parador hotel which is a chain of government owned
hotels that are located in places of special interest. The building
had been nicely designed to fit in to its ancient surroundings. We headed
back to the boat for the evening meal. Pizza tonight which I added sardines to
give it a bit of flavour. It was then back to town for a sit down and
people watch outside yet another bar. Unfortunately
I had arranged an SSB call for 10pm so we had to rush back. This
was a waist as we couldn’t raise anyone. So off to bed
it was. Off to Portugal early tomorrow. Good night
John boy.. Bye for
now. Pete and
John. |
