143:34.37W Here are a few pictures that relate to
the adventures we have encountered at UA POU in the Marquises. The approach to Ua Pou. We had
a great sail across to this island from Nuka Hiva. The fabulous sight that
greeted us on our arrival at Ua Pou and the Bay D’Hakahetau. John
looks at the town plan. The busy Main St and the Catholic
Church where we attended mass. A dugout canoe? Not what you
expect to see paddling out to see us on anchor. John and me with the local teacher
Peter (Pan). He spoke really good English and arranged John and David’s
guided walk. He also invited me to the ceremony
to welcome the Minister of Sport for Tahiti. The local lads doing their traditional
war dances very similar to the New Zealand Haka. The Minister of Sport on the right
with all the garlands. He later put one over my head to welcome me to the
Marquises. Also the local children all dressed
up in Grass Skirts. View from the dock with me warring
my garland with pride. The pinnacles were an always present
and dominating feature of the hike, although sometimes the peaks were obscured
by the rolling mist David and myself both looking and feeling
pleased with, perhaps, just a touch of smugness at having reached the highest
point of, what at times was, a steep climb Looking back down to the coast, Fai
Tira is on anchor and just out of sight The pinnacles are deceptively high
and steep. Our guide said that the main one had only been climbed twice and
that one of those assaults took best part of aweek The secluded picturesque waterfall
