The glow from the light of Shirley Heights on the south coast of Antigua
appeared just before dawn and by 8 o'clock the island was before us
shimmering in the mist. That was 8 o'clock boat time but as we hadn't moved
our clock for several days it was only 6 am Antigua time and as the port
offices wouldn't have been open we stopped the boat and all had a swim off
the back....Finally approached Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour at 10:00
and what an approach. The word 'Dockyard' may conjure up images of cranes
and container ships, but Nelson's Dockyard is a step back in history, still
with its Georgian docks and buildings, beautifully restored nestled in a
spectacular narrow bay, the main base of the British fleet in the 18th and
19th Century. We anchored off until mid afternoon, relaxed, slept and then
motored in to tie up on the dock and went looking for our first rum punch.
