As the sun came out, we made the short passage
across to Herm and found a perfect anchorage with no swell, all to our selves in
Belvoir Bay. We went ashore to explore the island.
Shell beach was even better!
The intrepid explorers!
Just 3 miles from Guernsey, Herm has a much gentler
landscape than Sark. The beaches are stunning, the water is freezing - at this
time of year at least! There was no charge for mooring but we had to get
permission from the harbour administration office to remain
overnight.
Apparently Herm has been home to Neolithic man,
monks, pirates; quarrymen who quarried the island's granite; Sir Compton
Mackenzie, although we don't know if he did much writing there, and a Prussian
Prince. The quarrying did a lot of damage to the island and it became very
neglected. The present custodians are the second generation of a family
appointed by the Bailiwick of Guernsey to administer, restore and conserve the
island.
We found Herm very peaceful and atmospheric with
its Neolithic grave sites, abundant bird life and gently sloping contours.
We started wondering why we live on the muddy east
coast.
