We decided to visit this fascinating old town with
its high walls , narrow streets and ghetto of restaurants. We shunned the marina
which was gave too long a walk into town and moored up off the town key which
was quite busy. It is difficult to find an
ordinary shop within the walls but the town still retains some charm and to walk
around its walls is well worth the time. The views over the docks and the rocky
seaward approaches contrast with the tight roads and tall buildings in their
dour granite behind the walls . On one side the walls front directly onto the
sea and the local tourist shops had some very dramatic pictures of waves driven
by a north-westerly wind breaking over the wall. The local town council had
placed sizeable tree trunks embedded in the sand at the foot of the wall to
protect it but they appear to be doing little in the photos.
The forecast promissed some fine weather so we
decided to visit the Rance behind the tidal
barrage.
