                | After a few days in Lymington we came across to
Newtown. At this time of year, when there are so few boats about, this must be
one of the most beautiful places on the south coast. We had a gentle dinghy and
walk up to the New Inn at Shalfleet for whitebait and a pint. This morning
has dawned as a picture perfect day...see the pictures. Sadly lorraine is laid
up with a cold so I went exploring ashore on my own upto the village of Newtown
which, before the slit came, was the biggest port on the Isle of Wight. It
fell into decline about 500 years ago. Even by the 18th century it only had
about 200 people but it still returned 2 MPs..."a rotten borough". Today
all that remains are some lovely old houses, the layout of the streets of the
town in the paths and field patterns and the preserved
townhall. |
