Isla Beata is our last stop in DR. The island is remote and located at the
end of long unpopulated peninsula which stretches out for about 45nm south of
Bayahona.
Our passage down there was straightforward but require the engine for a few
hours until the wind picked up.To get there we had to pass between the mainland
and the island through what is referred to as the canal. Nothing like a canal
really but very shallow. We were running so thought it sensible to take down the
main and go through on head sail alone. Once threw we hung a left and anchored
in about 4m of water off a small fishing village and a government Naval Office.
It wasn’t long before we had the visitation from the authorities. Two officials
and two fisherman who provided the boat. Four glasses of orange juice, 4 bottles
of rum(for later) and a US $10 for security all was fine.
Norm was feeling a bit lazy so I headed off to the beach to explore and try
and get some fish for dinner. The settlement seemed to be populated by only men
and iguanas. I guess it was an outpost for fishing only. However there seemed to
be a lot of people lazing around. Everyone was friendly and I managed to get
some fish before returning to RT.
