NZT 1200 Yesterday
when I said ‘I'm sure there is more to follow', it was more of a off the cuff
remark, I actually didn’t expect anything else to go wrong. Well couldn’t of
been more right. The
rest of the story comes only covers us up 1900hrs, and hopefully what comes next
in the blog will be the end of it because I’m bloody tired (that was the polite
version) To
set the scene everything was fine and dandy after we furled the genoa and sorted
that little problem, then we eat breakfast drank tea/coffee, basking in our self
importance as we were sailing in the right direction already trying to make our
minds up about which bar we were going to have a couple of shandy’s in on
Thursday evening when we arrived in Eden. This self belief we call it I’m sure
it has being called ‘cocky’ is probably why men will never win the battle of the
sexes. Truth be known the majority don’t even know its a war and enjoy a simple,
happy, and totally unaware life. ....and
back to the point, we decided that we jump into action and prepare for the
worst and took the main down to run mouse line to run the reefing line from the
first reefing point and the 2nd and 3rd, upon hoisting the main the halyard
broke and there is no safe way of running the halyard back into in mast as the
next halyard is only 3/4 of the way up the mast so we will do that when we get
to Eden. So undaunted we managed to use the 3/4 height to hoist to main sail up
and then put the 1st reef in to make up for the lack of height in the mainsail.
this work fine and while we were all patting ourselves on our back we went to
carry on with our trip, the wind had moved on so now we are low on course and
heading south well to fast to be mentioned, basically the whole afternoon
the wind has **ck us around we tacked twice and ended sailing in circles I
think, well I’m pretty sure we passed the same cloud formation twice.....(anyhow
they all look the same!!!) So we decided to motor straight towards Eden what
could possibly go wrong. I’ll tell you we, started to furl the head sail
up and yes you guessed it the barrel of the roller furler had lost it’s nuts!!
so again James wen t to the bow to reroll the furler (this time with clothes
on!) only this time the Allen screw had, had enough and decided to jump
overboard, ungrateful bastard it was getting a free lift. We found some machine
screws well stole them off a couple of winches and all was again with the roller
furler. We are now motoring toward Eden where we will repair the odd couple of
thing that have gone wrong. To
be honest the big star of the journey so far has got to have been Leigh
who can always be relied on to provide the very best quality food in the worst
possible situations. We
are getting 5 star food in cramped conditions well done. Last
night sailing was interesting the seas got a little bigger and were around 1 to
2 meters, it was quite lumpy but once we have put a reef in the night went
pretty uneventfully, we have had more of the same this morning but with the sun
out it doesn’t seem as bad, the genoa is about 40% out and this has help settle
the boats motion with the waves and we are having a ball. Let keep our fingers
crossed that this stays with us for another couple of day. Ok now its really
time to get some rest. In about one hours time we will have less than 500nms
before we reach Eden and beer!! Cheers Mark, James and Leigh
