A Thought from Theo
As my leg of the trip moves into it’s final stages, I can start my
sarcastic pre-reminiscence,
“Oh, I’m going to miss the raw physicality of having to flush the toilet
with a manual pump! And when will I ever get to use my newly learnt skill of
accurately throwing toilet paper out of a porthole?!”, I’ll say. Now, I’m not
going to get all high and mighty and claim that I’ll live my life differently
once I get my feet back on solid ground, in my experience, these epiphanies tend
to last about 2 weeks at best. And I’m not making out that this is, by any
means, a meagre existence, we eat well, nap in the sun and read until our hearts
our content. But the reality is, I’ve become aware of a change in
perception while I’ve been at sea, I’m appreciating things more because I have
less. For example, the day that we reached the half way point between St. Helena
and Salvador I had a shower, a slice of cheese, half a can of beer AND a slice
of fruitcake. ‘What a celebration!’ I thought, ‘this is the best day’. And I
don’t even usually like fruitcake!
Miles travelled in the last 24 hours: 130 miles
