An early start to meet our guide Alain at 7am at the start of the trail which is right by Ti Tou Gorge. Again we came expecting rain and mountain clouds but were lucky and it stayed dry and pretty clear and sunny for the whole of the 5 hour round trip.
Boiling Lake is the second largest of its sort in the world - a large and deep fumarole where gases rise from a magma chamber and superheat the water causing it to bubble away. The water level is much lower than normal at the moment, literally over recent weeks, for reasons that are not understood but hopefully not indicative of a problem brewing.
The route took us through the ominously named Desolation Valley where the combination of smaller fumaroles bubbling away and major landslides during Erica and Maria make it a pretty challenging and scary place, though the hot stream did boil our eggs beautifully. I felt suitably stupid having brought hard boiled eggs from the boat, only to discover Alain had brought fresh on to cook in the river.
