Las Perlas bound

We departed Panama City yesterday and spent the night at the island of Taboga . we are now heading towards Las Perlas, unfortunately under engine. It was a difficult choice we needed to get to a place to clean the bottom to help us through the ITCZ but of course we are burning some of our valuable diesel for the windless days. Still we figure that people sail round the world without using engines and have done for many years. By being in Las Perlas and cleaning the bottom we hope to catch the favourable winds forecast for Friday onwards for a few days. It is a question of just getting stuck in we are going to get caught in some calms at some stage in any case. We did however try out the symmetric Spinnaker with no main in 4 knts apparent and could move at about 2 knts so we might use that later on in the trip. Felt very odd kite with no main to blanket it!
we are also conducting a carrot storage experiment, and true to my science based training we have a control group as well. There are 2 theories on test:
1 do carrots keep better wrapped in newspaper or not
2 do carrots keep better with the ends cut off (which are the bits which always seem to go bad first)
so we have 4 groups :
with ends trimmed wrapped in paper
with ends trimmed in plain air
with ends on in paper
with ends on in plain air
this major research project will be reported on in due course!
or have we started going do lally already!
