Whilst Saeed and Ahmed prepared dinner, we set off  with a sundowner in hand to climb the sand dune, which is much harder than it looks. We make it to the ridge to watch the sunset.

Three wise men...A long way down

Time stands still in the longest sandy desert in the world at around 250.000 sq miles. It extends over the countries of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, UAE and the sultanate of Oman, with ever changing shades of red, orange, yellow, gold and brown depending on the time of day.

On top of the world

For dinner we had camel biryani with vegetables, fruit, local dates and ginger tea. We had opted to sleep under the stars and had wondered if we had made the right decision when the wind started to blow. We wrapped scarves around our heads and zipped ourselves into sleeping bags. When the wind stopped after a couple of hours, it was still, peaceful and very dark - no light pollution here.

In the morning the fire was re-lit and we enjoyed a breakfast of boiled eggs, bread , cheese spread, fruit and ginger tea.

What a view to wake up to.
