The Panama Canal stretches 80 km from Panama City on the Pacific side to Colon on the Atlantic side.

The canal has three sets of double locks, Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks on the Pacific side and Gatun locks on the Atlantic side.

Between the locks sihps pass hrough a huge artificial lake, Lago Gatun, created by the Gatun Dam across the Rio Charges and Galliard Cut, a 14 km cut through the rock and shale of the Isthmian mountains.

With the passing of each ship a staggering 52 million gallons of fresh water is released into the ocean.
