MARTINIQUE -  St Pierre

We had a very lively sail across to Martinique, with the winds reaching 34 knots at one stage! We dropped our anchor in the bay of the pretty seaside town of St Pierre which lies at the foot of the Mount Pelee’ volcano on the west coast.

Ashore with Mark and Chrissy we visited the ruins of the Theatre and Prison, which was built below the Theatre. Rumour has it that when the side of the volcano facing St Pierre burst open in 1902 killing nearly 30,000 people only 2 survivors in the town remained, Leon Leandre a cobbler and Cyparis who was imprisoned for murder who was in a stone cell.

Opposite the ruins we spotted a homemade sign  for fruit cocktails. A small bar had been set up in a  room at the front of a house, with just two tables, four chairs and a rubber plant in the corner, the four of us soon filled the place! We had a delicious cocktail of fresh fruits and local rum.

Later in the afternoon  Fia Tira and Scott Free – who are a mother and daughter crew - anchored in the bay and the following day we met up with them for coffee. Whilst we were all ashore Scott Free began to drag their anchor and was soon drifting off to sea, luckily Mark and Chrissy had returned to their boat and noticing Scott Free was missing jumped into their dinghy, the boat had drifted quite a way out. Mark slowly towed the boat back into the bay with his dinghy!

Excelsior Tours Has now branched out into Search and Rescue. When we were in Dominica Mark organised a water taxi to take 10 of us ashore that evening calling himself Excelsior Tours so when anything needs organising now we call on Excelsior Tours.

We lifted our anchor mid-day heading for Fort-De-France, where Duco on Briet had a lobster pot wrapped around his propeller and he needed the help of Paul and Mark and their dive equipment.
