Been putting these off....

There are a couple of jobs that have been on the list for a long time and I just haven’t fancied doing them. I guess they have never got sufficiently close to the top of the list – until today!

After a better night’s sleep I decided that it was time to service the winches. The poor things have never been serviced and the boat is now 8 years old. As is ever the case with jobs that have been put off, it wasn’t a difficult task and, with the aid of a U tube video, I soon had them stripped down, cleaned and reassembled. As you can see from the photo they really did need it.

The other job was a different story. The race regulations require you to have a deviation chart for the ship’s magnetic compass. Apologies to any purists reading this, but with modern technology I don’t use the ships magnetic compass to navigate so understanding whether it’s reading a degree or two out doesn’t keep me awake at night. Nevertheless the rules require a deviation chart so I looked up how to do it and duly went out this afternoon to “swing the compass” as it’s termed. Basically you pick a landmark on a known bearing and compare it with your own compass readings. It had the last laugh on me though, as the weather was a little unsettled here today and as I got to the designated spot, the mist came in and I couldn’t see the bloody landmark I had chosen. Still, I persevered and got there in the end.
