Five Islands

We only stayed one night at Fernandina Beach. We were getting fed up with the wind and current interaction as Five Islands moves all over the place, whether at anchor or on a  mooring. The last 2 moorings we have been on have had long pennants, and even when tied as close to the crossbeam as possible, was long enough to go under the bows. The storms were continuing so we decided to go straight to Brunswick Landing rather than our scheduled stop at Cumberland Island. We will do that next season. After leaving Fernandina Beach we crossed the St Mary’s inlet, entering the state of Georgia. We continued up past the naval area, where the nuclear submarines are located, then into the winding ICW channel.

The ICW separates Cumberland Island from the mainland and bordered on both sides by marshes.

Past another inlet and in-between Jekyll Island and the mainland. This is our second last bridge.

In the distance we see our last bridge, a 480ft high cable-stayed bridge. John calls it the ‘see from anywhere’ bridge as we had seen it for most of the day. It is actually the Sidney Lanier Bridge.

Approaching the bridge had our speed down to 3.4kts. We just don’t seem to be able to time the tides and currents too well. The water was swirling out when we were going up river.

There was no need to worry about getting under this one, if the car carriers can do it so can we. The clearance is 185ft, just a bit more than our 58ft mast.

Just past the bridge we turned starboard and entered the inlet which houses our destination, the Brunswick Landing Marina. After calling the Marina (Ch16 and switch to Ch 68), Dockmaster John and Cindy guided us to our berth on Dock 5 and caught our lines.

Five Islands is home for the next several months. The docks are floating with 30 & 50amp outlets, water and cable TV plugins (not that we have TV).

The Yacht Club is the social hub of the marina where there is always a keg of cold beer available, free of charge and free wine at happy hour Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. We like this place already.
