Yesterday was fish day. It started at 02.30 when a wave dumped a bucket of water through our open bathroom hatch. John got up to close it and was getting back into bed when there was a wet flapping happening on the bed. After fumbling around for the light switch and finally turning it on we found a 6" flying fish flopping around on the bed between us. It had launched itself from the sea, over the side of the deck and somehow come in the through the hatch above our bed (which was only open about 2"). John picked it up and threw it back out the hatch, returning it to the sea. There was a distinct smell of fish for the rest of the night and I removed lots of fish scales from the sheet in the morning. Miss Kitty had one land at her feet at the helm during her shift. We removed 3 from the deck that morning as well. We also caught another Mahi Mahi yesterday (and lost another a few minutes later) and had fresh fish and chips for tea. We now have enough fish in the freezer for several meals. Like all boats this one leaks, and I woke this morning early to find the mattress was wet. Water is seeping in on the corner, so we are trying to dry the mattress and linen and prevent a reoccurrence. Last night was our first night of squalls. The wind was gusting to 35kts apparent (approx 25kts) and we hit a boat speed of over 9kts (albeit briefly) and of course it was on the girls shift. We are averaging around 5.4kts and have done 130nms over the past 24hrs. The seas have increased so we have chop and at least a 2 metre swell. 'Liseron' is riding quite well with not too much slapping as we are in a following sea. The boys are currently moving the kayak from one side of the boat to the other so we can reef the headsail if need be. The winds have been consistent easterlies (90 to 100 deg) so we have been using the headsail only. 1895nms to go to our waypoint north of the Tuamotus, about another 2 weeks at our current pace.
