Five Islands

The weather had settled so it was time to head out to the islands off Placencia. We left Placencia anchorage via the Nth pass and motored (these new engines are getting a good run in) for a couple of hours out to Wippari Cay. This island is renowned for the 'Permit' and 'Tarpon' fishing. An American has set up a fishing lodge here called 'Whipray'. We anchored next to a large captained charter catamaran. There was not much room as there was another boat anchored to the south end of the island. We donned our masks and fins and took to the water. This is the first snorkel we had done since we left Providencia 2 years ago. The water clarity was ok but the abundance of soft coral, little reef fish and a large Tarpon, who eyed us from a couple of metres away, was a very nice re-introduction to snorkelling for us.

The night was not one of the best i have spent. We had squalls and numerous wind shifts which swung Five Islands fairly close to the moored catamaran beside us, so we spent most of the night on anchor watch. We rock and rolled a fair bit as the waves were washed around the southern point of the island and into the anchorage. We decided that one night here was enough and as stronger winds (15 to 20kts) were forecast we would move to a more sheltered place.

Anchored near the southern end of Wippari Cay. The Pelicans were plentiful and very active with their dive bombing displays. They rarely missed catching a fish with each dive.
