Today has been eventful. We have zigzagged attempting to make west, which we have done but have lost some south in the process. The wind was up to 12 knots again today, but on the nose yet again. We have been beating (and slamming) most of the night and day. We had a visit from a long line fishing boat this afternoon. We noticed a boat coming directly toward us at speed (they were leaping out of the water over the waves - it must have been a rough ride for the guy up front). They asked for water and cigarettes (Miss Kitty donated a pack of hers). Soon after they left we had another one come up on the other side waving a blue shirt in front of him. We finally worked out that he was indicating the direction that his long line was lying. We steered away and were progressing parallel to them when the pulley block at the end of the boom which was holding the temporary outhaul line broke and then severed the outhaul line. John and Nigel then proceeded to thread lines through the boom and do the necessary repairs. Miss Kitty acted as the general gofer and i was at the helm. The long line fisherman came over to watch proceedings and after giving them some water and lolly pops they guided us on our way (away from their lines). They were from Ecuador (200nm away). They must have had a mother ship in the vicinity but we didn't see it. We did however see a Marlin, not doing the great jump out of the water thing, but cruising on the surface. It had a thin, long dorsal fin and Nigel identified it straight away (on his way to the fishing line). We continue to see at least one pod of dolphins per day which is special. We are now 435nm from Galapagos.
