It is 3pm Panama time and we have been underway for 25 hours. We are currently sailing under full sail, albeit slowly, but it is good to have the engines off. As expected there is little wind, but we found some at midday and shut the engine down after motoring all night and morning. Apart from the lack of wind, the conditions are beautiful, and we have really enjoyed our first overnight sail. We are now into a set routine of 2 hour watches, with 6 hours off, so it is not too strenuous. Last night was uneventful, although as we are still near the entrance to the canal there were a few ships about. We managed a meagre 89 nautical miles for our first 24 hours and we do not expect any improvement on this for some days. We are currently heading south west towards the Galapagos, which is roughly 800 nautical miles from here, so it may be a slow crossing until we get across the equator and into the trade winds. We caught a mackerel yesterday afternoon and Nigel made some ceviche (raw fish cooked in lime juice and other seasonings) for entree and then cooked some more for main. It was very nice, but we might be eating steak tonight as we haven't had a bite today, probably because we are going to slow for the lures. We had a visit from a pod of dolphins earlier today which swam with us for a while. This is our first blog update using the sat phone so hope it goes through. So so far all is well, very relaxing and enjoyable, but some more wind would be nice. We are down to about 3 knots at the moment as the wind is fading so it may be back on with the engine soon.
