Title: 25. LORD HOWE ISLAND, YLHI - 9 /10 .1.2009 - A restful stay at a beautiful place

"31:32.5S 159:04.8E"

Today we had our (10km - 3 hour) ride on our rented bikes and on foot to reveal an island
composed of varying aged remnants of older islands that partially joined together again
during a turbulent era on earth.

Starting from the much younger land where most residents live, and where we stayed
at our Beachcomber lodge, we passed via giant banyas, palm forests, mutton bird rookeries
& onto more ancient areas.

We got a lot of information on birds, flora, fossils, palm, tourist industry, bush
tucker & medicine plus snippets of volcanic & colorful local history and more.

So much more to see, if you take your time, take a bike and stroll around................

An interesting site we visited this morning:

The crash site of a RAF Catalina, which attempted an emergency landing
in the lagoon at night in 1948, after having had a fuel leak.
We saw scattered remains of that airplane.

We understand that Lord Howe Island is slowly disappearing
(in millions of years from now of course) and we learned
why its sister Island have long gone & and where they were.

Tomorrow morning we take the wings again,  and move on to Norfolk Island.
