Monday 23rd August
We drove along the Glacier
Highway towards Wanaka with the wild Tasman Sea on our right and snow
capped mountains to our left. We stopped at the picturesque Bruce Bay, with
natural driftwood sculptures as far as the eye can see.

The road then climbs to 450 feet
above sea level to Knight's Point. Our next stop is at Ship Creek, named
after a strange piece of boat from a shipwreck was washed ashore in
1871.

We cross numerous bridges and
don't see any other vehicles for hours. At Haast Village we turn inland
towards Wanaka 145 kilometers away. The road snakes along the Haast River,
climbing up to Haast Pass and Mount Aspiring National Park. As we move inland
the scenery changes dramatically, we drive between the regions beautiful twin
lakes, Wanaka and Hawea, two fresh water lakes wedged between snow capped
hills.
