It was a bit rocky and rolly when we woke up at Koh Ngai as the wind and seas were creeping round the head of the island. We upped anchor and set off for the well known islands of Koh Phi Phi. Sod's law was back again - we had 15 knots of wind on the nose with steep seas, making for a very uncomfortable journey, the squalls didn't help matters either. The journey seemed to go on forever and we realised we hadn't had anything like this for a long time, very unpleasant. Paul wasn't fazed though, he was doing his usual, he has taken to watching films on his laptop one after the other, so Amy and myself were left to keep watch.

Phi Phi is one of the loveliest island groups to be found anywhere and has become famous for the spectacular vertical cliffs rising up from the clear seas and beautiful lagoons and for the beauty of it's beaches. Phi Phi Don was once said to be one of the three most beautiful islands in the world and geographically little has changed with the idyllic island, it is the development on the island which has grown and the thousands of day-trippers who spoil it somewhat.

During the tsunami in 2004 Koh Phi Phi was one of the worst hit sites. Both Ton Sai and Loh Dalem Bay were almost wiped out by the impact of the killer waves overlapping simultaneously on either side of the thin stretch crossing the centre of the island. Walking along that stretch of island you just can't imagine what it was like. The blue water rally were here in Thailand when it happened, it really is a frightening thought, mother nature is not something to mess with!

Some people haven't liked Phi Phi Don because of the development but we enjoyed it, it has a great atmosphere. Walking along the thin strip you wouldn't realise you were surrounded by sea on either side as the clothes, dvd, food, day trip, dive and other nik nak stalls hide it but then you reach restaurants and bars stretching out across the beach with the dozens of outriggers lined up together out the front and you see the beauty of the bay. We're hoping to go back and spend Christmas there.
