Day 2 - Ubirr

After lunch we made the short journey to the Ubirr where a 1 km circular track takes you past several fascinating Aboriginal rock art sites. The rock art at Ubirr tells two different stories. For archaeologists, the story is one of changing artistic styles. These reflect changes in the environment and Aboriginal society over many thousands of years. For aboriginal land owners, the paintings tell the story of their country and their culture.

Look for a variety of small human figures. Archaeologists estimate these paintings to be 5000 years old.

Favourite foods often feature in the rock art - fish and turtles

Aboriginal people have lived around Ubirr for over 20,000 years. The art which recorded events in the lives of the residents of Ubirr is now a priceless part of the worlds heritage.

We made the steep climb to the top of a rocky lookout that offered superb views over the Nadab floodplain - you can see Amy in the right picture

Climbing back down with a one-legged ranger - it was incredible how he climbed down the rock
