Sunday 14th November

Next stop, Pasalat, a reforestation centre where sapplings of sandalwood, ironwood and other native trees are being reintroduced to combat logging, mining and fires. On Pasalat's bulletin board it says:

Hutan...
Bukan hanya milik kita
Hutan...
Warisan bagi anaj cucu kita
Lestaikan Hutan

The Forest...
Not only ours
The Forest...
Our grandchildren's inheritance
Preserve the Forest

The many medicinal plants for problems such as malaria, as well as many more

Once deep into the forest we came across a small house/information centre 'Pondok Kerja'. It is home to Ladan, the planter, and two men we passed along the platform who were building a shelter as a rest stop along the pontoon. They will work out here for 15 days at a time and then return to Kumai, only to repeat the process 15 days later. Ladan showed us the sapplings he had ready for planting into the forest and we chose an Ironwood tree with the durian fruit, a delicacy for orangutans. We thought it important to chose a favourite of the orangutans as we want to provide for them as much as we can. Although our little tree is exactly that, little, it is a step in the right direction.

Once we'd chosen our healthy looking sappling it was measured at 65cm and it's details noted. Ladan then led us into the forest and clambered through the ferns with Jack and Amy in tow, to dig the hole and plant the sappling. Ladan will take care of it from now on and make sure that it grows into a big strong tree for our new found friends.
