We caught all of the tides right and were
pushed along with an extra 2 knots. As we were approaching Fannie Bay, our
anchorage for the night we were almost flattened by a 40 knot squall that
had crept up on us. Welcome to Darwin.....
We had called Darwin Port Authority three
hours prior to our arrival and had been instructed to anchor in Fannie Bay, in
order to undergo a muscle-disinfestation treatment the following
day.
Approaching Fannie Bay with Darwin City in the
background
A phenomenon that blights this corner of
Australia is the black muscle infestation and all yachts arriving at Darwin and
wishing to go into a marina have to undergo a disinfection procedure to guard
against this infestation. These muscles grow around skin fittings and
quickly block water intakes to engine systems. In order to control the spread,
all vessels are cleaned with detergent. At 3pm we were dived on and all our
seawater pipes were treated with disinfectant, we can't move the boat run
the engine or generator for the next 14 hours.
