After a rainy night dawn broke to show us Niue in the distance, and we were able to reach harbour by 10am.

The island is an independent country - with its foreign affairs administered by New Zealand. Inhabitants, of which there are 1300, have dual citizenship. The island is heavily subsidised by NZ, but is very beautiful and unspoilt (there are 50 hotel rooms on the entire island and 1/3rd of visitors arrive by yacht.

We spent the afternoon de-salting the yacht, after clearing customs and immigration (and after spending a couple of hours in the bank trying to get out some cash!).
