After a month in Opua Marina, we headed off south to our final destination,
Gulf Harbour Marina
on the Whangaporao peninsular 30 km north of Auckland. We spent 7
days on the trip, stopping
in a number of places in the Bay of Islands and down the coast.
David got in a bit of fishing, with some success.
This one turned out to be a ray...
...which put up a helluva fight and was rewarded with it’s freedom.
Sandra and David returning from a scallop hunting expedition...alas without
success. In the anchorage
a baby (1.5 metres) hammerhead shark spent some time swimming about the
boat.
Sandra relaxes, very happy she did not meet the hammerhead while in the
water!
Leaving the Bay we passed the famous hole in the rock near Cape Brett. Tour
boats were
holidaymakers out and go through the hole.
We sat our a blow in the isolated bay. There was a very active
whaling station here which
closed the 1930s leaving only the old boiler and some stone walls.
Mansion House Bay on Kawau Island at the top of the Hauraki Gulf.
In the marina at Gulf Harbour, about 15 NM across the gulf from
Auckland.
Bondi Tram remains in Gulf Harbour, up for sale, while we look to settle
back in Sydney. It has been
a fantastic 5 year adventure sailing around the world. We saw some
wonderful places and met
some great people. |
