Rome and Pontile Islands

From the Bay of Naples we went west to Ventotene, a small island that is
part of the Pontile Islands.
Below is the entrance to the old Roman harbour, which was carved out of the
rock.
 A busy little harbour, with fishing boats and pleasure boats out from the
mainland for the weekend.

 Ponza is the largest island of the Pontile Islands, also a very popular
weekend spot. Here we are following
some friends into Ponza harbour.

Here it is just leaving its anchorage.

 Gaeta on the mainland of Italy. The buildings on the left are a
nautical training acadamy for the Guardia
Finanza (Customs).
 Beautifully decorated Italian train. The graffiti in Italy is
terrible, though they seem to largely keep it off
the walls in tourist areas. Here we are about to get on the train in
Ostia for the 30 minute ride to Rome.
 Leaving the underground Metro station of Colosseo, we are immediately faced
with the Colosseum over
the road.......
  ......and to the right the Arch of Constantine.
 We crossed the Tiber River near the remains of Ponte Rotto .....with the
Isola Tiberia in the background.
 This is the remains of Portico d'Ottavia, A theatre planned
by Julius Caesar and built and named by
Augustus in honour of his sister Octavia.
 From there we wandered into Piazza Venezia
  to discover the Vittorio building. Built to
commemorate the unification of Italy and called "the wedding
cake", or
"the typewriter" by the locals, it is now also the Italian War
Memorial.
