We entered the Venice Lagoon at 7 a.m. after an overnight sail from Croatia. We went up
to the entrance of the Grand Canal (to the right below) and Bondi Tram poked a nose in as it was very quiet
at that time of the morning.

We really enjoyed our time in Venice, on of the top highlights of our cruising so far.. it will be
hard to beat the Venetian experience.

Piazza San Marco

The island of San Giorgio Maggiori opposite St Marks.

After cruising around Venice for a couple of hours, we then went 5 miles up through the canals
to the island of Burrano (below: approaching Burrano)

We stayed here the whole time we were in Venice and really loved it.  We took our dinghy into
Burrano and caught the vaporetto to and from Venice every day.  Amazingly, there were hardly any
mosquitoes during our stay, considering we were surrounded by marshes.

In the background below is the island of Torcello, which was the first island settled in the lagoon and
at one time was much bigger than Venice with a population of over 20,000 - now no more than 50 people
live there.

We anchored fore and aft as there were four tides a day, running at 2 to 3 knots.

The church tower in Burrano leans at the same angle as the leaning tower of Pisa.  We cruised
through the canals in our dinghy, taking the pictures below.

Having dinner in Burrano, an excellent restaurant, we went twice the food was so good.

Very touristy Piazza San Marco

Ferry across the Grand Canal - 50 cents to cross

The Rialto bridge

but you were able to find delightful quiet back streets

Festival masks

Floating green grocer

The Australian Pavilion at the Biennale, with the "Mad Max" car that David worked on when
he worked for Ron at Asquith
