                | Landfall in Mallorca, after a day's passage from Menorca.  We thought
Mallorca the prettiest of the Balearic islands. Entering our first anchorage at Pollensa with a very palatial mansion on
the hill. Stardust with a Spanish Coast Guard amphibian landing behind them. Rugged cliffs line all of Mallorca's west coast. The anchorage at Soller From one tram to another.  These trams date from the early 1900's and
connect Puerto Soller with the town of Soller, half an hours ride away. Off like a Soller tram.... ....along the seafront... ...through the town of Soller.... ....to the railway station.   The railway connects Soller with the capital of Palma de Mallorca on
the otherside of the mountains.   The line was opened in 1911 and all the engines and carriages are original
and beautifully maintained. Here comes our train now.  The tram sheds are off to the right.
A  railway enthusiasts delight! Lots of room aboard.  The trains coming the other way in the mornings
are crowded with tourists from Palma, especially if a couple of cruise ships are in the
harbour. Passing one of the towns in the hills.  The trip to Palma takes one
hour and there are 23 tunnels and much pretty scenery. One of the five or six stations on the way with a decorative mosaic. This station had a little cafe. We then arrived in Palma. This is a beautiful city These guys had gone to a lot of trouble to look like a bronze statue. In the narrow streets of the old town. A very old olive tree. and some attractive buildings and gardens Lunch time drinks... with paella. Our last anchorage on the island was at Ponsa. Here is a monument to
the reconquest of Mallorca from the Moors by King Jaime of Spain. We made a meal of these very tasty and beaufifully presented tapas on our
last night in Mallorca. |
