We left Marion and headed for Cuttyhunk, which is a tiny island across Buzzards bay. An absolutely unspoiled little island with a few inhabitants, a few holiday homes which are presumable owned by very wealthy people, a sort of shop, and a few fishing shacks. We walked to the headland where we found a few old WWII defensive positions or look outs. Their position was very strategic just across the bay from Newport which was a major US Naval base. They were watching for submarines but apparently never spotted any, a fact I wasn't really surprised by. I think there was a flaw in the US plan there! Never the less, a delightful place.
Photos just don't do it, but this was the best we got. It's like stepping back in time.
This is the view from the military watch posts. You cant really blame them for not spotting submarines can you? If the earth was flat you'd see Spain from here (on a very clear day!)
Looking north over the anchorage to the next island. Alia Vita is out in the bay. The scrap on the floor in the foreground is the hub from an old windmill.
