Day 28,
The last couple of days (hopefully) of a long isolated
trip are always full of mixed emotions. Everyone is keen to get
there but no-one really wants it to end. I have always put this down to
team building within a group - the help and reliance on each other making
for close and long lasting relations. Of course everyone wants to get to the
shower/bar/party but part of us reflects on such a long time in such close
proximity to people who at the start were a bunch of strangers. Many crew
have commented that they just don't want it to finish. They want to stay in this
little timeless bubble.
So I thought this trip would be different after all M
and I have been together 24/7 for 10 years and hopefully not having any fond
farewells at the end of this trip as is often the case with crew. We
too will be glad of a beer once we arrive but the pause for some reflection is
felt strongly.
So I think it is more than the people thing (though M
does make an easy companion) it is the achievement itself. A sense of actually
having done what we have been planning for the last five years if not my whole
life. Crossing the Pacific. Wow! Thinking about it makes me realise
that it is more than this single trip we should be celebrating - it is
the culmination of all those skills, experience, and knowledge gained -
from the early days on the Clyde, round the Mull of Kintyre, racing, St
Kilda, Orkney, North Sea, Denmark, Baltic Sea, Atlantic
crossings. Slowly we have been building the experience to take on this kind
of challenge. So excuse us if we pat each other on the back and have a wee toast
once we arrive - sooner rather than later please!
All well and 250 nm to go.
