Anita and John were delayed in getting back to Osprey by
the atrocious UK
weather. Attempts to reach the airport last Monday failed dismally – Woodlands
had a foot of snow and although the 4WD would have made it to Gatwick the roads
were completely jammed by damaged and abandoned cars so the attempt was
abandoned. Kuki turned out to be a wizard 4WD exponent and loved the challenge –
everyone else had their eyes closed! BA was not contactable for the next couple
of days with everything in overload so the next available flight turned out to
be yesterday. It was -5C at Woodlands and the roads were pretty slippery
however the journey to Gatwick was uneventful once we found which roads were
open. The Hogs back was closed yet again so we had to backtrack through Aldershot to pick up the M3. Gatwick was pretty smooth
thanks mainly to our Qantas Chairman’s Club Membership which by passed
the check in system and had us in the lounge in 20 minutes. The plane left
pretty much on time and it was a reasonable trip to St Johns. Neville met us at the airport with
a beaming smile and the news that England had been bowled out for 51.
Initially we though this was a joke then quickly adopted a disguise to avoid
the taunts of the Antiguans. Boat was in good shape and we were organised
within an hour and sitting in the restaurant at the end of the quay for pre dinner
drinks by 1830. A pleasant evening and an early night was called for. It was a
great relief to be out of the British winter. Andrew had mounted the new
mainsail and we will be able start getting ready to leave for the BVI which we
pan for Tuesday morning. Lots do in the way of storing and getting the boat
ready for sea in the next couple of days.
