Opsrey was hauled out of the water on the 3rd and having sat at Guava Island for three months was fairly well barnacled. A scrape and pressure wash cleaned off the worst and the sanding machine did the rest. All hull penetrations have been cleaned, anodes replaced, propeller polished and the hull topsides also acid washed and then waxed and polished. The change in a few days is quite remarkable. On deck the old windows from the pilot house have been removed and new armoured glass installed. This time without the tinting, which on the old glass was sandwiched between the two laminates. When it degraded over time the glass effectively became opaque and hence the new glass. Fortunately this was readily available. We might fit some externally mounted tinting later but it is difficult to see the need at this stage. We have a great guy from Jamaica called Kirt, working on the window installation. He has a 2 year old daughter who has figured out how to call him on his mobile. She’s great and he just leaves the phone on speaker and chats away to her whilst he is working. The external wooden window surrounds are being replaced with stainless steel which will give more strength and do away with the need and cost of varnishing them twice a year. The modifications to the jib furling system are basically complete but the fore stay needs shortening a little to compensate for the extra toggle. The main furling system has been completely revamped and there is still a fair amount of work and testing to be done to it. The size and strength have been increased three fold and the system not only is but looks really beefy. Attachments around the gooseneck are completely different from the old one and I am waiting for some lessons from Profurl on the maintenance side of it. The new bimini frame is in place though still need a couple of extra braces installed to give it more rigidity. One minor miscalculation on my part is that the tent will need to be re cut so it either attaches to the bimini or goes over the top of it. I will wait until we have them both on board and tested before deciding which way to go. Hopefully there will be some before and after photos posted with this mail. The boat will go back in the water tomorrow and we will then continue the work up whilst berthed at River Bend Marine Centre. There will also have to be some trial sails once all the modifications are ready. Geoff is really looking forward to that!
