30th December. Having been stuck in The Saintes yesterday with an adverse weather forecast we were finaly able to head out at 0600 this morning and sailed up the coast of Guadeloupe, past Pigeon Island where we had stopped on the way south and were able to make it to Deshaies in time to go ashore for lunch in a local Cafe. Even though it is Sunday the place was pretty full and there is no doubt that the French really enjoy their extended lunch hours. Have to say we have started to adapt to that way of thinking as well. We are going to have an early night and an early start for the passage from Guadeloupe to Antigua which is notoriously rough. Maybe we will be lucky this time? Deshaies is a funny little anchorage - pretty but acts as a giant wind funnel or bowl and is not a place you would want to spend other than an overnight. Whilst quite safe the wind howls around the bay and sounds a lot worse than it actually is.
