The favourable weather continued through the week, with a force 4 wind just aft the beam, light enough at times for the genneker, warm sunshine by day and brilliant star lit nights in the absence of any moon, all the way through to Friday evening. Good mileage each day, although still periods of adverse currents which pinned back our progress over the ground. We guess these may be back eddies from the gulf stream, which would apppear to be a little to the north of our track which only took us up as far as 39 degrees north.
The sea also remained remarkably smooth for the amount of wind, also helping our progress, and adding to our comfort. However a rising wind over Friday night had us put in a second reef in the main, and Saturday was a fairly rough and lurching ride in quite a big beam sea. The day was enlivened by an encounter with another yacht, which Henry called up on VHF, and was suitably entranced by a delightful Swedish voice that responded. Also bound for Faial. Very little other shipping encountered en route, 3 turtles spotted, several pods of dolphins, and lots of Portugese men of war. Today the wind has backed around into the SSE, force 4 or 5, which is slowing our final approach in to the Azores, so it may well be Tuesday morning for our arrival, rather than the hoped for Monday evening.Still plenty of food to keep us going, supplemented by a daily loaf from the newly qualified master baker.
