We finally made it into Horta at 0200 Tuesday morning, very grateful to have remained ahead of a very large depression which promised 30 knots or more of south easterly wind in the following 24 hours. We had been sailing to windward since Sunday in 20 to 25 knots of wind, and as the sea built and checked our progress we resorted to motor sailing on Monday morning in order to maintain our progress.Faial was in sight before nightfall, with John winning the prize for the first sighting of land after just over 14 days at sea.We were fortunate in the weather remaining relatively fine, so we had good visibility for our approach in to the harbour, and were quickly secured alongside another boat at the reception jetty.A glass or two, before falling into bed.
Tuesday morning Henry completed the entry formalities, and we settled in to being back in touch with the land. Priorities were flights home for John and Rob, and laundry. Long queue at the laundry, there are a lot of boats here having crossed from the USA, Bermuda and direct from the Caribbean, but a bar adjacent to the laundry eased the tedium of waiting. Ashore for dinner at the Cafe Sport, iconic destination, and extraordinary good value, before a few night caps and a full night's sleep.
Today, John and Rob fly out early afternoon, back to UK via Lisbon. Eric stays with us for another 2 weeks while we explore the Azores. Until the weather improves we will remain in Horta.
