Spellbinder
Mon 25 Jun 2007 18:24
A brisk sail was enjoyed from Port Joinville, Isle d'Yeu, to Les Sables d'Olonne with the wind in the SSW and a largish swell from the NW when south of the island. The wind backed into the south and reduced a little, but Spellbinder was able to lay Les Sables d'Olonne on the starboard tack throughout. After a stay at Les Sables in yet more bad weather that allowed all those little jobs to be completed onboard, Spellbinder set sail for the mooring buoys off St Martin de Re on the Ile de Re. On that evening of 23 June the weather quietened down, the sun came out and we were able to dinghy ashore to explore St Martin de Re. The highlight was a climb of the clock tower to enjoy panoramic views of the harbour and its approaches, and the rest of the Ile de Re.
After a very quiet night at a buoy Spellbinder sailed off the mooring and enjoyed some imaginary racing against other yachts beating their way under the vast bridge connecting the Ile de Re to the mainland and subsequently berthed at a very busy Port des Minimes at La Rochelle. That afternoon of 24 June Ali, la fille de Martin, arrived by air so then we were three. The weather remains very unsettled but looks to be better in Biscay than the English Channel where the shipping forecast is reporting severe gales!
