We have made fine progress since Sunday, with SSW wind varying between force 3 and 4, occasionally 5. This has given us a lovely sail on a broad reach, often between 6 and 7 knots, and with favourable current mainly between 1/2 and 1 knot. There have been some periods of slightly adverse current, but not long lived, and we still have not found a link between water temperature and current.Weather has also been fine, with sunny days, and cool nights with high humidity. All in all an excellent spell.
Today we have turned a number of milestones. It is 12 months since Spellbinder sailed from Falmouth, at the start of this cruise, since when we have logged just over 9,000 miles. By noon today we reached the half way point of this leg from Bermuda to the Azores, with 866 miles to go. Having taken 8 days for the first half, we can see the chance of doing the second half in maybe less time if conditions remain this favourable. We also turned up 12000 miles on the log just before noon. Sufficient reasons taken together for the captain to approve cake for tea, AND a can of beer before supper.Yes, that is a can of beer each.
We changed clocks one hour forward at noon, to take account of our eastwards progress. One benefit of our watch system is that we can change the time without changing the watch lengths, so no one loses out.
The fresh bread is at the end of it's life, so shadows of Mike and Bunny as Martin takes his first shot at bread making, pan on the stove - results in the next blog.
