Blog
Spellbinder
Fri 6 Apr 2007 14:38
This blog is a new feature for 2007. We should be
able to update on a regular basis wherever we are, using the newly fitted
Iridium satellite phone.
The iridium is one of several upgrades that
have been added to Spellbinder in preparation for this year's cruising. We have
also installed a SAT C system which links us via the Inmarsat system to the
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Both SAT C and Iridium allow
us to receive and send e-mail traffic whilst at sea. However data rates are
limited, and so traffic needs to be carefully controlled. For normal contact
please use our web based e-mail systems in the first instance.
As well as communications we have also been
enhancing the electrical power systems with both solar panels and a towed in
water generator. Photo attached of the solar panel frames made in teak by
shipwright Ian Greet, the panels not in place. The other major addition will be
a wind vane self steering system which is due to be fitted in about three weeks
when the boat is out of the water for the anti fouling to be replaced by
Cuprotect.
