We woke up early ready for our journey with the hope of some wind and pulled up the anchor on Tuesday 23rd September at 5:10AM and motored off towards the most South Western tip of Europe, Sagres & Baleeria 37:00.77N 8:55.65W

We did not stop motoring all day witch was a bit of a pain however after repairing the engine cover I felt a little happier running the thing as I knew it would not run out of oil in a hurry, we were also on a mission to get in before dark and with the days shortening we had no choice really but to run the thing.  Even after leaving at 5 AM. It was a lovely day at least after we managed to doge all the fishing buoys on the way out. The sun rose up to reveal a very, very flat sea. I guess it was perfect for motoring.

We managed to pass the SW tip of Europe in the late after noon and being such a calm day we motored right in close to the towering cliff’s where fishermen gave a new meaning to rock fishing adding it to a list of most dangerous sport’s.

We cruised into the small fishing harbor which was very quiet and dropped our anchor next to our friends Den and Sadie. We were pretty tired but not before a glass of wine and a lovely meal. The next day we got up and played boat for a bit before going walking along the cliff’s to gather the perspective of how they look from above and not below. We visited Henry the Navigators school of navigation, built about 400 years ago and the place many famous sailors and explorers were taught how to navigate by the star’s. I am still very thankful someone invented GPS at affordable price’s.

That second night Fiona and I entertained our neighbors and fed them Fabada, a stew made from white beans, chrizon, black sausage and cured ham. Yummy.

Special comments by Fiona:. Passing Cape Sao Vicente, the tip of South West Europe was certainly a highlight for me.  We had made it down the Atlantic coast of Portugal and finally turned the corner!  And what bet way to do it, in calm sea’s and beautiful sunshine.  This cape is notorious for being dangerous if there’s a bit of wind around, so thankfully we planned it just right!

It’s also been nice to have another couple cruising with us.  Not only are Den and Sadie great company but it is reassuring to know that some-one else is looking out for you on route and vice versa
