Day 16 - Penzance

We untied at 10:15 AM Monday the 4th of August and set sail for Penzance 50:06.97N 5:31.67W

We left the harbor and flew out towards Lizard point with everything working in our favor. Fi took the helm and smashed Silky through the SW swell as Craig and I watched the Speedo crawling up, almost to double digit’s - ‘I wish’.

The day started off great with a lovely wind and bit’s of blue sky making its way through the overcast sky. It did not last long however as the rain came down we got soaked for another day, this stupid rain is doing our heads in.

The plan for us was to anchor up in Penzance and then leave for the Scilly Isles at 2AM to run with the tide and arrive in the morning to some sun and a nice anchorage. Well that was the plan, we went to bed early and come 11PM we were all just about thrown out of bed as the wind and swell picked up in our unsheltered anchorage. As it finally came 2AM we were all knackered, the sky was black and the NAVTEXT said Gales on the way so sailing we were not and we went back to bed. Don’t think for a second we got any sleep because we did not, we had to sit it out at anchor being thrown about like a toy in a bath tub. As we hung on we could see the safe harbor only 30 meters away but we were unable to enter due to the tidal gate or sill that did not open until 7AM. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. ..

We motored in moored up 5 deep and eat breakfast, went for a walk, and then made our way to the fishing tackle shop to talk about fish with the local’s. After a small purchase and a quick exchange of ideas we headed back in the RAIN and put on a DVD, opened a bottle of wine and sliced up a block of Gorgonzola.

This is all stupid because I think we will be here for another day or so waiting for a safe crossing window.  Ah…..the joys of sailing!
